The new intermodal transportation center
was in danger of losing a vital component when the structural steel prices
for the small dome area came in considerably over budget. Unsure how to cut
costs, the construction team turned to Steele Structural Engineering for
help.After reviewing the original structural
drawings, SSE devised an innovative solution without compromising the
architect’s vision - cutting more than $95,000 (a 30% savings) in the
process.
With the original design,
the roof joists alone cost almost $230,000 (materials, not erected).
Using SSE's design, the entire structure (red iron, trusses and deck) was
fabricated and erected for less than $200,000.
